Climate change is the challenge of our time. While policymakers, corporations and other institutions of power have a responsibility to act, solving climate change will require society as a whole to come together. **We, the citizens, can be part of that solution**, and drive the change towards a clean, sustainable future.

**Welcome to the project site of Climate Campaigners.** Uniting science institutes, cities and municipalities, civil society organizations and digital entrepreneurs, we provide a global climate action tool, integrating social science research insights and policy support with grassroots action.

Comprehensive Mapping of Individual Behaviour to Anthropogenic GHG Emissions

This report, “Comprehensive mapping of individual behaviour to anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Emissions”, provides a re-assessment of the database of a survey created in the [ECHOES ](https://echoes-project.eu)project. This assessment is extended for the partner countries that are not included in the ECHOES database (Peru, South Africa, and Azerbaijan) through data obtained from similar national studies or reports. The ECHOES survey and similar existing data for partner countries/cities that the ECHOES survey does not cover provide valuable information concerning the lifestyles, lifestyle choices, and behaviours of citizens in the partner countries and respective Lighthouse Cities.  Analysis of the findings from the ECHOES survey and similar existing data, as well as the analysis of the relevant literature provides significant results and pointers to the relationship between the characteristics and living conditions of citizens and their carbon emitting behaviours. 

Within the context of Climate Campaigners, these results are utilized in order to derive and implement targeted and impactful policies as well as for identifying the possible co-benefits of climate-friendly lifestyle choices and behaviours. Through these results, the potential adverse effects of unintended consequences regarding such choices and behaviours for vulnerable groups can be identified and avoided.  This report provides the country level and city level analysis, a country level comparison of results, a city level comparison of results, and the comparison of country-level and city-level results. The city and country level analysis also include interim conclusions and policy suggestions for the particular countries and cities.  

Through the demands of individuals as customers, and processes that are employed in order to fulfil this demand, individuals’ behaviours and choices directly and indirectly affect carbon emissions. One significant goal of climate change mitigation policies is to influence individuals’ decisions and behaviours in a way to adopt climate-friendly lifestyles and decrease carbon emissions.  Due to its carbon intensity, the current model of global economic growth is not sustainable. Hence, countries need to design their growth strategies and policies through low-carbon action plans. However, it is not straightforward to fulfil this endeavour through the use of technological development, safeguarding sufficient funds, or constructing the necessary infrastructure. The success of climate policies is highly dependent on citizens, and a comprehensive understanding of the carbon-emitting behaviours of individuals, their awareness, and pathways to adopt climate-friendly lifestyles.

Scope of actions to reduce GHG intensity of daily life in Lighthouse Cities

This deliverable report provides a comprehensive analysis of GHG habits in the Lighthouse Cities through the use of two main tools: (1) State-of-the-art literature review on the perspectives, methods, and concepts relevant to climate lifestyles and behaviour change, and (2) Expert Survey that captures the lifestyle-related environmental opportunities and feasible policy actions debated in the Lighthouse Cities.  

Three overarching insights are identified as provisional conclusion:  
- Many factors, dynamics, and parameters can influence and support more environmentally friendly lifestyles and behaviours. However, these are often context and sector-specific and require an understanding of systems of provision, political economies and ecologies, and urban lifestyles, and the variated and uneven experiences of residents within cities.  

- Reviewed literature is diverse, but primarily centred on survey-based research focused on individual behaviours and techno centric approaches. Further research could focus on broadening the reviewed methods, geographic contexts, and disciplines involved.
  
- Lifestyles are not simply a matter of individual choice, but must be understood and addressed across multiple scales (e.g., individual, household, community, city, region), sectors (e.g. transport, energy, waste, food, housing, and water, amongst other), and spheres of influence (e.g. psychological, cultural, political, social, material, economic). 
 
The analysis demonstrates that results of the Climate Campaigners Expert Survey and the literature review are highly consistent. Both analyses found that significant factors affecting lifestyle choices are awareness, sustainable mobility and energy efficiency. Hence, policy formulations in these areas can be utilized as levers to induce behaviour change and adoption of climate-friendly lifestyles.

Climate crisis - the challenge of our time.

**“The climate crisis has already been solved. We already have all the facts and solutions. **All we have to do is to wake up and change.**” - Greta Thunberg**

**Climate change is upon us**. After decades of dragging our feet in the face of this threat, with constantly rising emissions as a result, we are now in the decade where emissions instead must start decreasing.

Luckily, the awareness about the need for a *swift and just transformation* is steadily growing. Following the Paris Agreement in 2015, the stage is set for all countries of the world to move forward together. And that project requires **all hands on deck**. 

In the European Union, the ambition to become climate neutral by 2050 and reach at least 55% emission cuts by 2030 requires a fundamental and rapid change in the way we live. It requires citizens to take responsibility and make fundamental changes in policies and economies as well. Pathways to reach this goal must be fair, effective, inclusive and fully backed by citizens from all walks of life.

**Here is where Climate Campaigners comes in**. This project aims to be the mechanism for citizen-driven change in a way that is fully immersed in behavioural research and integrated with local, national and EU level policy goals.

The two higher-order objectives of Climate Campaigners are: 1. providing the best possible and highly impactful scientific support to designing mitigation pathways and policies and 2. creating immediate engagement of citizens in climate actions and supporting them in adopting a more climate-friendly lifestyle.

Our definition of lifestyles shapes the research agenda: *a series of choices and the habits of a person regarding how to live and behave, according to the individual’s intentions and values, available opportunities, social and structural context, and perceived incentives*. Hence, the project follows a holistic view on lifestyles, from daily routines to long-term investments and one-time choices (e.g. pension funds, electric vehicles). This definition limits a climate-friendly lifestyle *not only to the things we do and consume*, but includes the support (or at least acceptance) of policies with potentially negative impact on someone’s own comfort level, financial matters, freedom of choice, etc. 

In short: citizens working together have the power to drive the change we need to see. A credible solution to the climate crisis must harness that power. With the Climate Campaigners project, we aim to contribute to that solution.

Lifestyles - across policy areas.

What do we do with our time and resources? Our lifestyle choices and consumption patterns impact most aspects of society and economy. As consumers, we constitute the demand-side of the economy and dictate the conditions for the market, and as citizens, we shape our common norms and cultures as well as our democratic institutions. This fact is reflected in the diverse range of relevant policy areas, some that are in specific focus within the Climate Campaigners project.

One of the key challenges for the world in dealing with climate 
change is how to achieve truly sustainable mobility. In the EU 
alone, the sector represents 27% of the total emissions, and 
steadily growing.

The goal of the Climate Campaigners app in the mobility 
category is to calculate the annual carbon footprint (GHG 
emissions as kgCO2eq) for app users’ annual personal mobility, 
including direct GHG emissions and emissions from fuel and 
energy production for selected mobility modes.

Life cycle–related GHG emissions for different mobility modes 
can typically be linked to direct emissions from fuel combustion, 
emissions from fuel or energy production, vehicle manufacturing, 
vehicle end-of-life processing, and infrastructure building. 
The majority of GHG emissions from mobility are, however, caused 
directly by burning fossil fuels (petrol and diesel) in internal 
combustion engines.

The solutions for sustainable mobility are out there, though - and 
the demands and creativity of ordinary citizens will lead the way. 
On this page, we’ll post useful things around mobility from and 
related to the Climate Campaigners project.

It’s time to reimagine how we design, construct and renovate buildings. Whether it’s on 
an industrial and societal scale, or the kind of unit we have the most personal power over 
our homes.

Globally, buildings and construction account for 29% of energy-related GHG emissions 
which, in turn, account for approximately two-thirds of all global GHG emissions. 
The energy consumption of buildings account for approximately 75–80% of the life cycle 
GHG emissions whereas the rest are embodied emissions deriving from, for example, 
construction, maintenance, and the end-of-life stages.

The goal of the CAMPAIGNers app in the housing category is to calculate the annual carbon 
footprint (GHG emissions as kgCO2eq) for app users’ housing, including direct and indirect 
GHG emissions from heating and electricity production and embodied emissions from 
construction, maintenance, and the end-of-life stages.

It’s hard to underrate the importance of improving the way we 
produce and consume food, at a collective scale, including 
concrete shifts like the one to a more plant-based diet. The great 
thing is that in a sustainable food system, not only are there 
huge wins from a climate and environmental perspective - 
health-related, ethical and financial benefits are also there to enjoy.

Globally, GHG emissions related to food systems represented 
34% of total GHG emissions in 2015. The majority of these 
emissions, 71%, were from agriculture and associated land-use 
and land-use change activities. The remaining emissions were 
from supply chain activities such as transport, consumption, 
packaging, industrial processes, and fuel production. 
Approximately 57% of nutrition-related GHG emissions are from 
animal-based food production.

In our project, citizens are encouraged and supported to explore 
ways to a more climate-friendly food consumption. It’s worth noting 
that in the app, for calculating an exact carbon footprint related 
to nutrition, multiple questions would need to be answered by 
users, such as which type and how many different proteins they 
eat. For some users, that might be difficult. Therefore, no product-
specific questions regarding diet are asked. Instead, the average 
values of different diets at national levels are used, and users 
are only asked general questions about their diet and the amount 
of food they consume.
