Climate change is the challenge of our time. While policymakers, corporations and other institutions of power have a responsibility to act, solving climate change will require society as a whole to come together. We, the citizens, can be part of that solution, and drive the change towards a clean, sustainable future.
Welcome to the project site of Climate Campaigners. Uniting science institutes, cities and municipalities, civil society organizations and digital entrepreneurs, we provide a global climate action tool, integrating social science research insights and policy support with grassroots action.
On this site, you will be able to read more about our project and its campaign, access our reports and publications, and get to know the partners and cities that co-create this project.

The present document “CAMPAIGNers Guidebook: incorporating lifestyle-related pathways and actions into NDCs and long-term strategies” aims to understand the potential consequences deriving from the inclusion of carbon-neutral lifestyle advices in NDCs and national climate strategies and to operationally implement practical examples to include behavioural aspects of the carbon-neutral lifestyle in the sectors investigated. This guidebook intends also to support policymakers and governments to reframe and redirect their national policies and inform society, which constitutes the final stakeholder of the implemented policies.

report
06.12.2023
Until now, the majority of climate change mitigation policies have primarily focused on reducing emissions on the production side, with comparatively fewer measures addressed to the demand side. According to the IPCC ‘having the right policies, infrastructure and technology in place to enable changes to our lifestyles and behaviour can result in a 40-70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050’. Despite their key role in addressing climate change, the importance of sustainable lifestyles and behavioural change is not yet sufficiently recognised in UNFCCC priorities and processes.

COP28 represented a crucial moment in the global fight against climate change. While the Paris Agreement lays out the foundations for climate action, the role of governments, individuals, communities, and businesses in achieving our climate goals cannot be underestimated. Behavioural and lifestyle change are pivotal in driving sustainable practices and enhancing the effectiveness of national climate plans but remain largely ignored so far. This event built upon the experience from the Horizon2020 “CAMPAIGNers” research project and seeks to advance discussion on integrating lifestyle change into UNFCCC and its implementing measures.

As with previous specific categories, consumption in general should take place within the planetary boundaries - and there are many ways we can move closer to such a state. Read more about other consumption patterns in Climate Campaigners here.
